Bariloche Argentina
Lago Gutierrez
where we were
living for 5 months
Arriving in Bariloche in late February we had no idea what to expect. Again, we
knew no one and had no personal contacts. We were hoping south Argentina to
be our settling grounds to venture out from and a place to earn a personal
income to live on and put into this foundation.
We hired a “remiss” (private taxi) at the airport. Actually we needed two b/c of
all our luggage. Driving to the house we rented for March in villa Los Coihues, we
took the scenic route through Bariloche along Lago Nauel Huapi (lake “na-well
whoppy”). To say the least we were most impressed. Never have I seen water so
crystal clear of deep blue and with the beautifully defined mountains contrasting
the brilliant blue sky it was all too surreal. The homes and establishments along
Bustillo are from a dream or a Tolkien story. Natural narely shaped wood built to
any design you could conceive. My imagination ran away with me. I half expected
to see gnomes, fairies and hobbits roaming around. Every lawn manicured as if
by hand and tweezers. Roses everywhere. Smiles on the faces. Men caring for
and showing immense affection for there children. We instantly fell in love with
Bariloche.
Since our arrival we have met and become friends with the kindest of souls.
People who work in the shops and restaurants we go to remember us even
passers by we have come across more than once greet us as friends. Everyone
hugs and gives a kiss on the cheek here also, including male to male. It is truly
refreshing to see such happy, loving people. We have yet to meet a person who
is not generous, compassionate or helpful.
Keep in mind we speak very, very little Spanish.
We contacted a Realtor who speaks English. Before even meeting her she
offered any help needed to us on our first phone conversation. Gil was in dire
need of some dental work and contacted her dentist for us who happened to
have an English speaking dentist in the office. The dental work we have both
received has been excellent and ¼ of the cost of the states. Anyway, we were
looking for a month to month furnished rental home with 3 bedrooms and a
yard in a quite area for under $300 per month. Sounds impossible right? Well,
Patricia, the Realtor found it. If you need help with real estate please contact

It is a simple house with an amazing view and a huge yard. We have been living
right on Lago Gutierrez which is 2 km around the lake from where we were in
Coihues.  The owners live about 50 yards behind us. Brother and sister of
French, German, Argentine descent. They are so kind and compassionate and
don’t speak English. Irma does un poco but Rudy nada. Through the language
barrier we have become friends. Our beautiful son Indigo has opened everyone’s
hearts and minds to us, more so than Gil and I could have done alone. I know he
will miss talking with Rudy as we will miss our entertaining conversations with
him too.
We will miss our new friends and this gorgeous piece of nature. We look forward
to coming back and reconnecting… and speaking Spanish.
Bariloche is amazing. It has something for everyone all year ‘round. We drove
south 2 hours to El Bolson. We did not stay long enough but it is worth going
back. Its energy is intense. I could feel it throughout my body within 3 mile of
the line. It is a true energetic vortex. It’s kind of like the Sidonia, Arizona of
South America.
Bariloche was the intended place for us to have a home away from our given
time to others and the E.C.F. But things moved too slowly and time moved too
quickly. We need to start helping those in dire need. So we will go north to
Central America where we can help and learn Spanish. We plan to come back to
Bariloche and build a home in a year or so.
We will miss beautiful Bariloche. We came to find property to build a house and
to get away. We found a place to come back to and a home in the warm hearts
of its people.
